Editing Tips

April 7, 2021.

The power of editing is exactly what takes an image, and propels it to another level of expertise.  Adjusting exposure, contrast, sharpness, saturation, white balance, and grain levels can take a mediocre photo, and enhance it dramatically.  Once you capture a photo, you must consider how you want to transform it into another form of art.  Through the use of editing, apps like Facetune, VSCO, and FaceApp, make this possible.

  • Facetune logo for editing of social media

Facetune is an app that is used to edit, enhance, and retouch photos. This app is usually used for selfies, and portraits. It gained a lot of popularity over the last couple years, and has led to many celebrity scandals. This app helps if you are not having a good skin day, or didn’t get enough sleep the night before. People sometimes over edit using this app, so make sure you do not whiten your teeth and eyes too much because it is very obvious to the viewer. This app is also more advanced than others, but easier than photoshop; however, some features are unavailable without purchasing the full app.

  • VSCO editing for social media images

VSCO is an app is “where expression matters most.” They help offer creative photo and video editing tools.” This app is also very popular and is similar to Instagram, but without the likes or comments feature. Many people use this app to edit their photos to have an aesthetically pleasing look and feel to their images. I find this app convenient and easy to use. The presets that come with the app are decent, but you are able to purchase more to enhance your look. This app is easy to use, and made to be simple for convenience. It provides a few free filters to use, but it is likely you will purchase more options to fit your desired aesthetic. From there, you can edit photos in a similar way, to create a pleasant feed.

  • FaceApp editing for social media images

FaceApp is relatively new and claims to be “the best mobile apps for photo & video editing.” Using the app suggests that you can take your selfie and turn it into a modeling portrait. I do not personally use FaceApp, but I have seen many Tik Toks of people showcasing how the app works, and completely altering their image to look different. This app is considered to be controversial because it allows you to completely augment the way you look. It is easy to use, and not as customizable, unless you purchase the app.

Facetune

Facetune is great for removing blemishes, dark circles, and wrinkles. You can whiten teeth, whiten eyes, lighten/darken hair, and alter the structure of your face.

It is important to not lose your authentic self with the use of editing, but there is nothing wrong with fixing any imperfections that are not always present (a huge pimple).

Facetune vs Influencers

Tana Mongeau

Tana has been accused of over Facetuning her images over the years, and admits in doing so. She has gone out of her way to edit the Getty images taken of her while she attended the People’s Choice Awards (visible to anyone). She willingly makes jokes about how she is ugly, and Facetunes her images to look better. Tana has faced a lot of backlash because of her drastic usage of this app, yet Tana continues to edit her images without hesitation.

James has been in the spotlight for many years now, and always finds himself in the middle of scandals, in which he has to explain his actions. One topic he has had to address was his use of Facetune. He loves photo editing/retouching, and has admitted to his use of Facetune because “everyone edits their photos.” He has become very open about using this editing tool, and even has made videos explaining how he uses it.

VSCO

We live in a time where over editing your photos can hinder your content. I would suggest adding slight adjustments on your photos so you are sure that you are not over doing it. Like my example above, I added a filter onto my image, but I adjusted the intensity of the filter. This will make it seem natural, while bringing back the color that was lost through the lens. Sharpening/adding structure on your image can give it more dimension, which can strengthen the overall image of your photo.

VSCO has been one of my favorite photo editing apps. It has an immense amount of different options to pick from; however, you have to purchase different filters or presets. Luckily enough, I downloaded VSCO a long time ago, so I got most of them for free. This app is great for basic editing necessities like adding back color, adjusting contrast, or adding grain.

FaceApp

FaceApp is a good tool to use when your face is lacking color. If you have been sick, or need a boost of glow, this app can help assist you. This app is able to add volume to your hair, as well as intensify your makeup.

There are many different features on this app like, face swap, gender swap, hair color, beards, glasses, etc. It is fun to play around on this app, and to see how much you can alter your appearance.
